General Description of the Job Class

The position is to promote exceptional operations for Duke Hospital. The director will be instrumental in implementing initiatives related to operations, equipment, personnel functions, productivity, compliance, customer service, work culture, finances, and system support.

• Onsite Accountability: COO, Duke University Hospital

Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy, Development, and Growth

• Develops Imaging goals, objectives, policies, and procedures in alignment with health system and local campus strategies.

• Administers and coordinates the functions of Imaging Services for all assigned areas, including Diagnostic Radiology, MRI, Mammography, CT, Nuclear Medicine, PET, Ultrasound, and Radiology Nursing.

• Recommends action to administration for capital equipment and infrastructure; serves as the administrative lead for implementation.

• Assists in growth planning and supports system imaging services through leadership, management, and standardization in alignment with the Duke Quality System.

• Collaborates with local campus leadership regarding facility utilization, patient care standards, and operational alignment.

• Represents Imaging on multiple leadership committees.

Personnel, Safety, and Culture

• Provides guidance and direction for Imaging managers and supervisors to ensure efficient flow of work assignments and patient care.

• Supports recruitment and retention initiatives; promotes professional development through the Career Ladder.

• Promotes a positive work culture, "Just Culture" principles, and an excellent patient experience.

• Leads quality improvement programs, competency assessments, and safety standards to ensure safe practices.

• Conducts frequent rounding and observation to determine operational effectiveness.

• Reviews SRSs, conducts A3s, and leads workflow improvement initiatives.

Operational and Regulatory Compliance

• Ensures the department maintains constant compliance with applicable regulatory bodies and operates in a safe, efficient manner.

• Maintains and enforces departmental and health system policies and procedures.

• Works closely with the Radiation Safety Officer and ensures all diagnostic equipment is properly maintained.

• Collaborates with other service lines, medical staff, and nursing to resolve problems and ensure service expectations are met.

• Actively works with referrers to ensure outpatient needs are met and capacity is optimized.

• Serves as a strong communicator with departmental leaders and executives.

Budgetary and Procurement Management

• Promotes fiscal responsibility and ensures expenses are maintained within budget.

• Responsible for the preparation and oversight of annual departmental budgets.

• Utilizes metrics and dashboards to gauge performance, identify trends, and lead data-driven changes.

• Reviews routine reports for effectiveness of labor distribution, revenue, expenses, volumes, and productivity.

• Performs other duties as required.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

• Required: Registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), or Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB).

• Preferred: Master’s degree.

Experience

• Five (5) years of progressive experience in Radiology.

• Four (4) years in a supervisory or leadership role.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

• Certification as prescribed by ARRT, ARDMS, and/or NMTCB.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Administrative Expertise: Considerable knowledge of hospital administration, departmental operations, and radiology practices (including patient care and equipment operations).

• Analytical Skills: Strong ability to analyze operational data and apply effective management techniques for optimal efficiency.

• Leadership: Demonstrated ability to direct and support supervisors, interpret policies into operational procedures, and resolve day-to-day issues.

• Collaboration: Proven ability to work collaboratively with radiologists, medical staff, employees, and the public.
